What is a Puzzle Ring & the Solution?

The concept of puzzle rings has often been widely used in silver rings. So what is a puzzle ring? A puzzle ring is basically a set of four, six or even eight interconnected rings, set with precious or semi precious stones, which can be assembled to form a gorgeous finger ring. When these rings are disjoint it is often hard to believe that they can even be assembled together. One curious thing about the puzzle ring is that it is impossible to reassemble it.

Usage of puzzle rings in silver jewelry

Puzzle rings, apart from being used in silver rings, have also been widely used in silver chains as well. On these chains, these puzzle rings have been placed as the central core piece instead of having a pendant, as one usually would in a necklace. The material used on the rings differs depending on the effect desired. Many times in addition to the usage of silver, cubic zirconia has also been used in conjunction. This looks pretty much like a diamond and is economically more viable.

What is cubic zirchonia?

Cubic zirconia refers to a highly rare mineral found in nature which is popularly used as a diamond stimulant. It is chemically referred to as Zirconium Oxide (ZrO2). It is very low cost, highly durable and looks so much like a diamond, that for most jewelry, this mineral has been widely used. Especially when used in silver rings, it lends a magnificent charm to the wearer. Just like a diamond, a cubic zirconia is also crystallographic wise isometric in shape. Its color under shortwave UV typically ranges from a yellow, greenish yellow or a beige shade. If one sputters via a vacuum a very fine layer of any metal oxide, into the finished zirconia piece, it creates a fabulous effect of iridescence. This is great for most silver jewelry where a little bit of sparkle and spunk is desired.

The appeal of a puzzle ring

Why is it that puzzle rings have remained an ever favorite? The primary reason being that the challenge of assembling these rings is so much fun. Apart from these, puzzle rings are typically very beautiful, especially when they are combined with sterling silver and embedded precious or semi precious stones. Especially when used in silver chains, it adds a certain charm - imagine being able to assemble your pendant! There is a certain timeless appeal of a puzzle ring that makes people want to go buy these even today.

Origins of puzzle rings

Traditional puzzle rings are comprised of four, six, eight or even twelve interconnected rings. Nowadays the more modern rings contain several rings of five or seven bands connected. Puzzle rings have their origins from the Renaissance period where they were widely used by Italian and English people. They were used in the olden days to ensure fidelity to one's spouse - if the wearer was cheating on their spouse, they would need to take the ring off first and then reassemble them later, which is not possible, thus catching them in the act!

Puzzle rings have been used in a lot of silver jewelry ranging from silver chains, to earrings and pendants. Their classic beauty remains a favorite among all people even today.
