The Basics of Making a Beaded Necklace

To begin with, you will need to choose your beads and these will, to some degree, inform the choice of materials you use. Heavier beads are better suited to Tigertail wire (also know as monofilament or nylon coated wire), which is stiff and does not require the use of a needle. It also has the bonus of holding its shape. Soft-flex wire is more flexible, being constructed of a larger number of wire strands. It has the advantage over Tigertail in one respect; because it is so flexible it is less likely to develop kinks, which the more rigid Tigertail is prone to do. Tigertail may also require the use of a pair of diagonal wire-cutters to achieve flush cuts.

Either types of wire can be used in necklace construction and both need to be finished with crimp beads. These are beads made of a soft metal that is squashed to keep a bead in position or to 'close' the open end of the necklace. A pair of crimping pliers is often useful for flattening these beads and fixing them into place. Effectively, the crimp bead is compressed into a 'U' shape and then folded over onto itself to create a round bead-shape.

For intricate designs, a felt bead board is a useful piece of equipment. Designs are laid out on the board before stringing and the felt prevents unnecessary movement. This is the first stage of the process. Once you have settled on your design, you can then cut the required length of wire, leaving an extra 12cm (5 inches). Around 40cm-45cm (16-20 inches) in total is a good rule of thumb for a short necklace, but of course, if you're making bespoke jewellery, it is advisable to precisely measure the neck of the person you are making it for.

Next, attach a crimp bead and one half of the clasp to your selected wire, leaving the crimp bead in a 'U' shape. The wire should then be pulled back through the crimp bead, which can then be compressed into a ball and hold everything in position.

The wire is now ready to receive the beads. The clasp and crimp bead will prevent beads falling from the wire. However, in the event that you are making a symmetrical piece but are not sure of the number of beads you will use, you should leave the clasp until you have added the beads - starting with the central bead and working your way out, adding beads at either end of the wire, until the desired effect is achieved.

Once you are satisfied with your piece, all that remains is to attach the rest of the clasp to the open end of the necklace, using the same process as before.

Beer Party Craft Necklace from Drinking Straws

A Beer party theme can be added to just about any kind of party event, from Mardi Gras, to Luau, to Oktoberfest. Why not liven up your Beer party event with a craft item that adds a little color to the party.

Beer Party Drinking Straw Lei

Thick paper, like cardstock or thick construction paper, Drinking straws (two straws for each lei), Yarn (about 2 feet of yarn for each lei), Scissors, Paint, Markers, glitter and glue.

This craft is so easy that even the slightly intoxicated can enjoy making their own Straw Lei. You'll start by, drawing and cutting out many flowers from thick construction paper. Create your own fancy or simple flower shapes. From here you'll apply a thin layer of glue to your lei flowers and sprinkle with glitter. Shake off the excess and let dry. You can also apply paint and use the markers to outline your flowers.

From here, your beer necklaces need to be made by cutting a drinking straw into 1 ½ inch long segments. You'll need to place a segment of straw between each flower on the necklace.

Next, cut a piece of yarn about 2 feet long. Tie a thick knot at one end of the yarn. Thread the smallest flower through the other end of the yarn -- push it down to the knot. Then, thread a segment of drinking straw; push it down to the small flower. Continue threading flowers and straw segments onto your beer necklace. When the last flower has been threaded onto the yarn, tie the ends of the yarn together. Voila! You've completed a Drinking Straw Lei for your Beer party.

Try out different variations on this party craft and you might be able to come up with a reusable drinking straw Lei for that Beer party event.

Why I Love My Cross Necklace

I love my cross necklace for so many reasons. I love the way that it looks, but there are many other reasons that I like it as well. My boyfriend has two cross necklaces for men, and when bought the one for me I just about melted. I had told him when I had first met him about how my grandmother had one when I was a child and I loved to put it on. Whenever I look at my cross necklace it reminds me of my grandma who passed away a few years ago, so it gives me a sense of peace whenever I look at it or feel it resting across my neck.

My boyfriend gave me the necklace after I had told him that I admired the one that my grandma had owned. He completely surprised me because it wasn't my birthday or any other occasion that you would expect a gift for, that is what I love about him, the way that he is so unpredictable. We were just driving to the grocery store and he reaches into his pocket and asks me, "Hey, didn't your grandma used to have a cross necklace like this?" At first I was really confused because I had no idea what he was talking about, but then when I noticed the smirk on his face I clued in. I told him a story about my grandma a few years back and this was his way of surprising me.

I loved my grandma when I was a little girl and one of the things that always reminded me of her was a diamond cross necklace. When I would see someone wearing cross pendants, or when my boyfriend and I had passed a jewelery store and saw one, I would always make a comment about it. Now that I have my own cross necklace I don't have to be envious of other people wearing them, or wish that I had one that I had seen at the jewelery store. The type of cross necklaces that I wanted was far out of my price range which is why it was so sweet of my boyfriend to save up the money and buy it for me. Those sweet little gestures are the things that keep relationships alive, and I can tell you that it definitely helps me to see the sweet man that he is. That is what I love about him, all of you men out there you should take a lesson from my boyfriend and buy your girlfriends or wives surprise gifts.

The Celtic Necklace is a Gift That Will Brighten Anyone's Day

The Celtic necklace - I think I'm in Love!

Upon a recent trip to the Celtic Festival here in Cincinnati, I became interested in Celtic jewelry and the symbols so widely used. Growing up in a very Irish family, it took all these years to learn that you can actually buy Celtic jewelry. I am embarrassed to say that I never knew it existed!

At the Celtic Fest, I fell in love with the wide variety of Irish and Celtic items that were for sale. The vendors lines the street, one after another. I found that most of the jewelry was sterling silver and I could not get over how cheap it was.

One particular vendor had me enthralled with her mini works of art. She had numbers of Celtic necklaces that she had hand-cut out of silver with a teeny tiny little saw. They were fabulous. I wish I had taken her card.

I did end up making a purchase that night. I bought my sister a leather checkbook cover that had a symbol stamped into both sides. I have never seen anything like it and I think she will be thrilled. But what I really got out of buying that gift was a desire to learn more about the Celtic symbols and what they mean.

So far, I have done some background research on Celts, the Celtic symbols of the Tree of Life, and the Claddagh ring symbols. What I have learned has been astonishing and makes me want to learn more.

The Celts (pronounced like Kelts), it seems, wore these symbols as necklaces, jewelry and on their armor. They hung them in the trees to ward off evil spirits. They truly treasured these pieces and believed they would bring them goodwill.

In researching the symbols, I have found that there are many meanings for each symbol. One general theme seems to present in each person's belief of what the symbol means but it is obvious that each person interprets each symbol in a different manner. Just try to find out what the "tree of life" symbol represents and you'll find everything from Jesus' birth and resurrection to reaching for the sky.

What I did conclude from my research is that each symbol can be interpreted by each person, and I have decided that makes these pieces even more unique!

How To Make A Hemp Necklace The Hippie Way With Insider Tips And Tricks

Materials to make a hemp necklace.

Hemp

Beads

Scissors

Optional materials.

Glue

Shower ring

Step 1. Cut your hemp cord.

a) Cut two cords that are 5 feet 8 inches in length. This is going to be your knotting cord.

Tip - I don't whip out a tape measure every time I need to measure my hemp. I measure it against myself. I pull it out to the width of both my arms spread to their max and cut it their. It's much quicker than measuring it with a tape measure.

b) Cut one thread or thin cord that is 2 feet 10 inches in length. This is going to be your center string. If you are using beads the will go on this string so make sure they fit. I measure it from my finger tips to my neck.

Tip - I like to use more hemp than I need. It's always easier to cut a little bit off than to fix the necklace if their isn't enough.

Step 2. Starting out.

a) Take the two knotting cords they are the thicker and longer cords and tie them together using an over hand knot. To do an over hand knot make a loop go threw the loop and pull tight.

b) Take the shorter thinner center string and both knotting cords and tie them together using an over hand knot two inches from where you made your first over hand knot.

c) Braid all three cords together for about 2 inches. Then tie them off with an over hand knot.

Step 3. Add beads.

a) Add the beads you want to use.

Tip - If it's hard to push the center string threw the beads because they have small holes. Place a drop of general purpose glue on your index finger then position the center string on the glue 4 inches from the end and pinch in place with your thumb. Then pull the string threw your thumb and index finger distributing glue along the final four inches of length. If some areas are still dry repeat. Hang the glued end in the air to dry for thirty minutes to an hour or until hard.

Step 4. Macrame.

Tip - The knots are much quicker and easier to tie if the center string is tight. So I take the loop that I created in step two and put it on a shower ring then I attach the shower ring to a hook or wall. I then take the center string and tie it to one of the belt loops on my pants.

a) Take your two knotting cords. Pull them to opposite sides of the center string.

The basic knot is called a square knot. It can be started from the left or from the right.

Their are two designs that can be created spiral and flat.

The flat design is created when you alternate your knots. Left, right, left, right or right, left, right, left.

The spiral design is created when you tie the same knot. Left, left, left, left or right, right, right, right.

It doesn't matter which knot you start with it matters which knot you follow up with.

Tying a left knot.

a) To tie a square knot starting on the left you take the cord on the left and lay it over the center string creating a loop on the left.

b) Next take the cord on the right and go over the left cord then under the center string and up threw the loop on the left of the center string.

c) Pull tight.

Tying a square knot starting on the right involves the same process started on the right side of the necklace.

When you are ready for a bead move the bead up behind the last knot you tied then tie your next knot on the other side of the bead.

Continue tying knots and adding beads until you get to your desired length.

I usually stop a necklace when the macrame and bead portion is long enough to stretch around my neck and touch ends.

Finish the macrame portion of the necklace by tying all three cords together in an over hand knot.

Step 5 finishing the hemp necklace.

a) Braid all three cords together for about 2 inches. Then tie them off with an over hand knot.

b) Cut off the remaining length of the center string.

c) Take the two knotting cords and tie them together using an over hand knot.

d) Cut off any remaining length and you are done.

Tip - The braided portion and loop on the end is for tying it off. You give them 4 inches of braid and four inches of loop so that they can tie it off to the length they desire and dispose of the rest.

Akoya Pearl Necklace - Akoya Pearl Jewelry

Akoya Pearl necklace is best known for its high luster and color brilliance. Akoya Pearls are commonly known as cultured saltwater pearls. Akoya pearls are the classic cultured pearls of Japan. In early nineteenth century, a Japanese man named Kokichi Mikimoto introduced to this world his bead-nucleating technique of culturing pearls in seawater - oyster's naturally occurring process of forming the pearl with human help thereby stimulating the process by producing the initial irritant or nucleus. Akoya oysters are small mollusks, so the pearls they produce range from sizes 3mm to 9mm. The oyster secretes nacre to cover the bead with layer upon layer of nacre. Thicker the nacre better is the quality. Akoya pearls are produced by Pinctada fucata oyster type.

In recent years China has come up with equally high quality akoya pearls. Every harvesting season, pearl farms growing akoya pearls often find small to medium size pearls of varying quality and it takes lot of efforts to choose the best quality pearls. The pearls are hand sorted, processed, and strung into hanks. Akoya pearl necklace made with quality pearls typically command higher values than freshwater pearl jewelry but comparatively cheaper than Tahitian and south seawater pearls.

With the new improved technologies and constant monitoring of pearl growth in pearl oysters, freshwater pearls often come in good quality and are available in wide array of colors and sizes but akoya pearls still typically command higher value. There is great demand for akoya pearls both in U.S and foreign markets. All akoya pearls are cultured pearls.

Higher grades quality akoya pearls that are known for their brilliant luster and nearly perfect round shapes make the perfect akoya pearl necklace. Each pearl is hand knotted and stringed together to make a beautiful akoya pearl necklace. Akoya pearl necklace is the preferred choice for many women and adorned all over the world. Although akoya pearls do come in cream, pink, rose overtones etc, yet white color is the standard classic color when it comes to buying akoya pearl necklace. It is always good to buy akoya pearl necklace with matching akoya pearl earrings and or bracelet. Akoya pearls are indeed very alluring and make excellent luxurious gifts.

The Blue Diamond Necklace

The Titanic necklace more famously known as the blue diamond necklace that was worn during the 1997 movie version of Titanic was one of the most memorable piece of jewelry in history. But, little to we know that it was worn by a survivor of the tragedy named Kate Florence.

The Heart of the Ocean which it was named after the ship sank was a fictional name for the jewelry piece. It was supposedly designed to look like the Hope Diamond which has never been to the sea.

But, Kate Florence has her own version of the Heart of the Ocean which was given to her by Samuel Morley with whom she was married to. Samuel Morley never got the chance to see his wife wear the Heart of the Ocean outside the Titanic as he is one many lives lost in that fateful tragedy.

That similar blue diamond necklace was also featured in the 1943 version of the movie of the same title. There were other versions of the story of the necklace. From that movie, it went missing and was the cause of the rift between the two lovers.

If you are to visit a Titanic museum, you will easily spot that the Titanic necklace has become one of the many popular souvenirs. But, there are other jewelers who find a fortune by replicating such piece of art.

Within the film, the Titanic necklace was made by a London based jeweler for only $10,000 but Kate Florence's Titanic necklace was a lot expensive to a point that it reach $3.5 million. It was then sold to an auction where it landed on to Celine Dion's neck.

During the 1998 Oscar Awards, Gloria Stuart wore a similar necklace fashioned like the Heart of the Ocean that cost about $20 million to create.

No matter what the history is with the necklace, it is a symbol of everlasting love that not even the depths of the ocean can contain. It has been known that this piece of art has long been in the public eye for more than a few decades back.

Amber Teething Necklace Information

Today, more than ever, parents are looking for natural ways to care for their infants children instead of reaching for over the counter or prescription drugs. Especially when it comes to teething, a perfectly natural event that marks various growth stages in infancy and childhood. As parents explore how to soothe and calm teething infants and children and give them comfort during these very uncomfortable times, they often turn to one of the oldest, most widely used, and complete natural solutions....Baltic Amber Teething Necklace.

For thousands of years, Baltic amber has been recognized for its incredible healing properties and analgesic pain relief. Completely non toxic, natural amber also supports the immune system which is especially important for infants and children when their young bodies are still in development. So how does amber provide such incredible relief? We're glad you asked that question!

Over 45 million years ago, an organic substance known as "fossil resin" was produced by unique pine trees in a very large forest in Northern Europe. When the temperatures in the forest went from cold to much warmer, the trees exuded a "sap" or "resin" which became part of the earth around them. As waterways in that area grew in size and strength, the "fossilized" resin reached the bed of the Baltic Sea and subsequently drifted in varying shapes and sizes to the shores. First recorded in 460 BC, amber became the most precious substance of its time as the "gold" of Lithuania, the messenger of ancient history to scientists (the resin having inclusions of tiny insects and plants of that period), and a most unusual healing solution. The healing properties of Baltic amber are attributed to its primary ingredient, Succinic acid, which is mostly located in the surface layer of the amber, and is an exceptionally powerful therapeutic healing agent. So how does amber achieve its role as the primary natural solution to relieving teething pain in infants and toddlers?

In order for Baltic amber to perform its analgesic function, amber artisans designed amber teething jewelry that could be worn comfortably and safely against the child's skin. When the skin warms the amber, it begins to exude its healing properties providing not only pain relief but a calming effect. The relief will last for long periods of time so you can remove the necklace when your infant is sleeping or unattended. The necklaces fasten with a screw clasp and strung by hand with special knots in between each and every amber bead so if the necklace should break, the rest of the beads will not scatter.

So remember your child doesn't need to endure teething pain and the irritability that comes with it. At the first sign of teething, which is most often drooling, find a respected and reliable source for a Baltic amber teething necklace. And then relax and let nature take its course.

How To Choose The Perfect Necklace - One that Makes You Look Your Sexiest

That necklace you wear can make or break the outfit. Of all the jewelry pieces you might choose, your necklace can make the greatest impact on the overall look.

Take a simple black cocktail dress for example. On its own, is almost like a uniform. You could disappear into the crowd if you are not careful.

Now add on a lariat. A stunning necklace that draws attention. Better yet, if you have the height for it, put on a pearl rope, or a gorgeous necklace that is 37 inches or longer. A really long necklace that makes a grand statement.

Choosing that perfect necklace is all about what suits you. Your height. Your build. Your neck. The outfit you are going to wear.

The right choice makes the overall look simply gorgeous.

Let's start with the neckline of the outfit. You want the focal part of the necklace to be either against your skin or contrasted against the fabric of your outfit.

The last thing you want is a necklace that is partially hidden in your neckline. That would spoil the overall look. If the pendant plays peekaboo in the neckline, then shorten the chain. Or put that pendant in either a shorter chain, so it sits confidently above your neckline, or go for a much longer necklace that would contrast beautifully against the fabric of your outfit.

Next, look at your neck.

Do you have a long slender neck? If you do, collars or chokers are for you. These ultra short necklaces bring out the beauty of your long slender neck.

If you have a short neck, then make it look longer by wearing a either a long necklace or a lariat. The long vertical line of a long necklace makes your neck look longer. The lariat, with the 2 dangling ends gives the illusion of length. These necklaces also have an overall slimming visual effect on your entire look.

Finally, look at your overall build. If you are petite, go for daintier pieces. If you have a larger build, go for something chunkier. Your necklace should be in proportion to your body.

Once you have evaluated yourself, pick a selection of necklaces that flatter your body, in colors that match your outfits. A few signature pieces are all you need.
